About Your Role

The Department of Strategic Communication and Media invites applications for a regular full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning August 2022. Primary duties are to teach applied undergraduate courses in the areas of journalistic and media writing. The candidate may be asked to teach additional courses, including Civil Discourse and in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester (four courses). Faculty members are required by contract to engage in continuing scholarly development and academic advising, and to perform department and university service. Days and times are variable.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Doctorate degree in journalism, mass media, public relations, communication, or a closely related field is required. A.B.D. will be considered. Doctorate must be completed by August 2023.
  • Minimum of two consecutive full-time years of professional journalism, media, or public relations writing experience is required.
  • Demonstrable experience and proficiency in media writing is required. Submission of a professional writing portfolio demonstrating an understanding of AP Style writing will be required at the time of application.
  • Successful performance in an on-campus interview, including teaching demonstration, is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment and education of diverse populations, including working with multi-cultural populations and an understanding of and sensitivity to issues affecting women, minorities, the LGBTQIA+ community and persons with disabilities, is required.

Preferred

  • Teaching experience in journalistic, media, or public relations writing at the university level, with evidence of teaching effectiveness, strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with active, relevant research agendas are preferred.
  • Extra consideration will be given to candidates with additional professional experience in the areas of multimedia journalism and sports writing.
  • Extra consideration will be given to candidates with experience in or, secondarily, interest in curricular or program development, online course delivery, and internship coordination.
  • Extra consideration will be given to candidates with experience in or, secondarily, interest in advising pre-professional student organizations.
