About the Diversity and Inclusion Chair

Aaliyah Thomas, Student, Slippery Rock University

Aaliyah Thomas has been writing since she learned how to hold a pencil, making it a fundamental part of her upbringing. However, she did not always envision a career in public relations. Initially aspiring to become a doctor, she later recognized the power of strong writing and discovered that she valued the compassionate side of communication more than physical healing. This realization led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations at Slippery Rock University.

Currently, Aaliyah serves as a student writer for Slippery Rock University’s Marketing and Communication department, where she has crafted over 150 personal interest stories, press releases, and social media posts. She has also held multiple roles with PRSA Pittsburgh, beginning as a student intern after a competitive selection process. During her internship, she collaborated with leading PR professionals on blog posts, copyediting, outsourcing, event planning, and more. Following her internship, she was offered a board position, where she now oversees PRSA Pittsburgh’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Aaliyah was also selected for the 2025 Bob O’Gara Scholarship, awarded by PRSA Pittsburgh to a student who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to the public relations profession.

Outside of work and academics, she enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with her family.
